Commemorative Silver Coins

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1572
1892 Columbian Half Dollar. NGC graded Proof 65. Lovely light even toning. There are only a handful of Proofs of the classical Commemorative series known, this actually is one of the more available, but has a mintage that compares favorably with proof gold coinage of this era. Any proof commemorative half is a rarity, especially so when found in gem grades like the present coin. Notice the depth of strike on Columbus's hair and the reflective mirror fields, also the strong definition on the rigging of his ship, features seldom found even approaching this depth on regular issue examples. A stunning example that will be a major highlight of an advanced Commemorative half dollar collection. Only 103 struck. Pop 7; 2 finer in 66. (PCGS # 9295) .
Estimated Value $8,000 - 8,500.

Lot 1574
1900 Lafayette Dollar. PCGS graded MS-66. A hint of blue and russet toning around the edges. This is far and away one of the finest of this popular issue, the only dollar coin struck in the historic commemorative series. Furthermore these were struck long before commemorative collecting became such an important part of our hobby, so most were sold to non numismatic sources and today fall into the lower grade ranges. Pristine gems like this are of the highest rarity and this is borne out by the tiny numbers that exist in MS-66 or finer. Notice the clean cheeks on Lafayette and Washington, as well as the open fields that surround them. Rarely are these found so well preserved and free of handling issues. The reverse too, is exceptional in quality and eye appeal. A solid representative of this prized condition rarity. Only 36,026 struck. Pop 85; 11 finer, 6 in 66+, 3 in 67, 2 in 67+. (PCGS # 9222) .
Estimated Value $13,000 - 14,000.
